Pricing is too often a taboo subject among tutors

January 18, 20242 min read

So many tutors come to me because they worry about charging too much.

In all the 1:1 sessions I've done with tutors, the one thing that comes up time and time again is pricing. Many tutors worry about how to price their lessons, hate talking about it and they worry about not getting work if they charge 'too much.' There is a mistaken belief that parents won't pay more than a certain amount.

My experience as a tutor has told me otherwise.

The first thing to do is research your competitors.

Look at what they're charging for comparable services, but don't get a hang up about it. If you've been teaching for several years and you have the expertise and subject knowledge, why shouldn't you charge what you're worth? Would you ever go to a specialist (be it doctor, lawyer or similar) and question their prices? You pay for their expertise and that's exactly what parents get when they sign their children up for lessons with you.

If you believe that you can't charge a certain amount or that you'll lose out to others, that mindset will definitely affect your ability to sell your services with confidence.

Instead, do these three things to set you on the right course:

Tip #1: List your expertise and background

Show it to parents or clients if you need to, but use it to prove to yourself that you have the credentials to justify what you're charging.

Tip #2: Share your testimonials and reviews

Show potential clients the value you add by giving them reviews from previous clients.

Tip #3: Create a professional brand

Invest in a professional looking website and marketing materials that reflect your expertise. It can go a long way to to boost your confidence and show potential clients they are buying from an expert.

If you question your pricing and worry about how your prices will be perceived, you will struggle to to confidently convey the true value of your expertise and may unintentionally undermine your worth in the eyes of potential clients.

There's a better way: own your expertise, highlight the benefits, and stand confidently in the worth of your skills. This mindset not only boosts your confidence but attracts clients who value and pay for quality tutoring.
